Your Privacy Matters

When you invite a smart home platform into your home, you are trusting it with information about where you live, what equipment you own, and how your home operates day to day. At Shipshape, we take that trust seriously.

This article explains exactly what data we collect, how we protect it, who can see it, and what controls you have.

What Data Shipshape Collects

Shipshape collects only the data needed to monitor your home and provide you with useful insights. Here is what that includes:

Sensor Data

  • Temperature readings from sensors throughout your home
  • Humidity levels tracked continuously
  • Power consumption data from monitored appliances
  • Water detection alerts from leak sensors
  • Equipment activity (on/off cycles, runtime duration)

Home Profile

  • Property information (address, square footage, year built, home type)
  • Equipment inventory (make, model, serial number, age, location)
  • Service history (maintenance visits, repairs, replacements)
  • Documents and photos you upload (data plates, receipts, warranties)

App Usage

  • Account information (name, email, phone number)
  • App interactions (which features you use, notification preferences)
  • Service professional connections (who is linked to your home)

What We Do NOT Collect

  • Video or audio recordings (Shipshape sensors do not have cameras or microphones)
  • Browsing history or activity on other apps
  • Financial information beyond what you voluntarily enter for budgeting
  • Location tracking outside of your registered home address

How Your Data Is Secured

Encryption

  • In transit — All data moving between your gateway, the Shipshape app, and our cloud servers is encrypted using TLS (Transport Layer Security), the same standard used by banks and healthcare systems.
  • At rest — Your data is encrypted when stored on our servers. Even if someone gained physical access to our storage, your data would be unreadable without the encryption keys.

Infrastructure Security

  • Hosted on secure cloud infrastructure with enterprise-grade physical and network security
  • Access controls limit which Shipshape employees can access production systems
  • Monitoring and logging track all access to customer data
  • Regular security audits and penetration testing to identify and fix vulnerabilities
  • Automated threat detection monitors for suspicious activity

Gateway Security

Your Shipshape gateway connects to our cloud servers over an encrypted outbound connection. This means:

  • The gateway does not expose your home network to the internet
  • It does not open any ports or accept incoming connections
  • It does not scan or access other devices on your network
  • It communicates only with verified Shipshape servers

Think of it like a one-way radio that only talks to Shipshape. It does not listen for or accept signals from anywhere else.

Who Can See Your Data

Transparency about data access is important. Here is exactly who can see what:

You (The Homeowner)

  • Full access to all of your data, always
  • View sensor readings, equipment details, service history, documents, and alerts
  • Available through the mobile app and web dashboard

Your Connected Service Professional

When you connect a service professional to your home, they can see:

  • Equipment inventory (what is in your home, age, condition)
  • Sensor alerts (so they can respond to issues)
  • Service history (their own service records)
  • Home profile basics (home type, systems present)

They cannot see:

  • Your personal contact information (unless you share it directly)
  • Your financial data or budgeting information
  • Sensor data unrelated to equipment they service
  • Other service professionals connected to your home

You can disconnect a service professional's access at any time from your app settings.

Shipshape Support Team

  • Can access your data only when assisting you with a support request
  • All support access is logged and auditable
  • Support staff undergo background checks and security training
  • Access is limited to the minimum data needed to resolve your issue

No One Else

  • We do not sell your data to third parties. Period.
  • We do not share data with advertisers. You will never see targeted ads based on your Shipshape data.
  • We do not use your data for anything other than providing and improving your Shipshape service.
  • We do not share data with insurance companies unless you explicitly request it.

Your Controls

You are in charge of your data. Here is what you can do at any time:

View and Download

  • Access all of your data through the app or web dashboard
  • Download your Home Health Record as a comprehensive report
  • Export sensor data history and equipment inventory

Manage Sharing

  • Connect or disconnect service professionals at any time
  • Adjust notification preferences to control what alerts you receive
  • Choose what information to include in your home profile

Delete Your Data

  • You can delete your account and all associated data at any time
  • Deletion is permanent and includes sensor history, equipment records, documents, and account information
  • To request deletion, contact Shipshape support or use the account settings in the app

Update Your Information

  • Edit your home profile, equipment details, and account information at any time
  • Changes are reflected immediately across all connected services

Compliance

Shipshape is committed to complying with applicable data protection regulations. Our practices are designed to meet or exceed the requirements of major privacy frameworks. If you have specific questions about how regulations apply to your data, contact our support team.

Common Questions

Can my landlord see my data? No. Your Shipshape account belongs to you. Unless you explicitly share access, no one else can see your data, including property owners or managers.

What happens to my data if I move? Your data stays with your account, not your address. You can keep your Home Health Record for your records, share it with the new homeowner if you choose, or delete it. When you set up a new home, you start a fresh profile.

What happens if Shipshape is acquired or goes out of business? Your data remains protected under our privacy commitments. In any transition, customer data protection would be a contractual requirement.

Can I use Shipshape without connecting a service professional? Yes. A service professional connection enhances the experience (they can respond to alerts and perform assessments), but it is not required. You can use Shipshape independently.

Does Shipshape work with other smart home platforms? Shipshape sensors and gateway operate independently. They do not require or interact with other smart home platforms (Alexa, Google Home, etc.) unless you specifically set up an integration.
