MyBudgeting: Plan for Home Equipment Costs

What Is MyBudgeting?

MyBudgeting is Shipshape's financial planning tool for homeowners. It helps you anticipate when major equipment in your home will need replacement and how much those replacements are likely to cost, so you can budget ahead of time instead of scrambling when something fails.

Most homeowners are caught off guard by major equipment failures. A water heater dies on a Sunday morning. An HVAC compressor quits during a heat wave. The sump pump stops working during a storm. These are not just inconvenient. They are expensive, and the emergency pricing and rushed decisions that come with them make everything worse.

MyBudgeting shifts you from reactive to proactive. When you know what is coming and roughly when, you can plan for it financially and make thoughtful decisions instead of panicked ones.

How It Works

MyBudgeting analyzes the equipment in your Shipshape inventory and builds a personalized financial outlook for your home. Here is what goes into the calculations:

Equipment Age

The most fundamental factor. A 3-year-old water heater is in a very different position than a 12-year-old one. MyBudgeting uses the installation date (or manufacture date, if installation date is unknown) to determine how old each piece of equipment is.

Expected Lifespan

Every type of equipment has a typical useful life. MyBudgeting references industry data on average lifespans:

| Equipment | Typical Lifespan | |-----------|-----------------| | Water heater (tank) | 8-12 years | | Water heater (tankless) | 15-20 years | | HVAC system | 15-20 years | | Furnace | 15-20 years | | Central AC | 12-17 years | | Sump pump | 7-10 years | | Dehumidifier | 5-8 years | | Refrigerator | 10-18 years | | Washer | 10-14 years | | Dryer | 10-13 years | | Dishwasher | 9-13 years | | Garage door opener | 10-15 years | | Electrical panel | 25-40 years |

When you add the make and model, MyBudgeting can refine these estimates based on the reliability data for your specific equipment.

Estimated Replacement Costs

MyBudgeting provides cost ranges for replacing each piece of equipment. These estimates factor in:

  • Equipment cost (the appliance or system itself)
  • Installation labor (professional installation where required)
  • Regional pricing variations (costs differ by market)
  • Equipment class (basic, mid-range, premium options)

Estimates are presented as a range to reflect the variety of options available to you.

Condition and Performance

If your equipment is monitored by Shipshape sensors, MyBudgeting also considers:

  • Efficiency trends (is the unit working harder than it used to?)
  • Maintenance history (well-maintained equipment often lasts longer)
  • Alert history (recurring issues may indicate approaching end of life)

What You See

When you open MyBudgeting in the Shipshape app, you will find:

Replacement Timeline

A visual timeline showing when each piece of equipment is likely to need replacement. Items approaching end of life appear at the front of the timeline, with further-out replacements extending to the right.

Each item shows:

  • Equipment name and type
  • Current age
  • Estimated remaining life
  • Status indicator (green = plenty of life left, yellow = approaching replacement, red = past expected lifespan)

Cost Estimates

For each piece of equipment on the timeline:

  • Low estimate (basic replacement, standard installation)
  • Mid estimate (mid-range replacement, typical for most homeowners)
  • High estimate (premium replacement or complex installation)

For example:

Water Heater (installed 2015) Current age: 11 years | Average lifespan: 8-12 years Estimated replacement cost: $1,200 - $2,500 Status: Approaching replacement window

Monthly Budget Suggestion

MyBudgeting calculates a suggested monthly savings amount based on all upcoming replacements across your home. This spreads the anticipated costs over time so no single replacement creates a financial shock.

For example, if your home has $15,000 in equipment replacements expected over the next 5 years, MyBudgeting might suggest setting aside $250 per month to be prepared.

Priority Recommendations

SAM highlights which replacements are most urgent and which can wait. This helps you prioritize your budget toward the items most likely to need attention soon.

What You Need to Get Started

MyBudgeting works best with complete equipment data. Here is what it needs:

Minimum (Gets You Basic Estimates)

  • Appliance type (e.g., water heater, HVAC, sump pump)
  • Installation date (or approximate age)

With just these two pieces of information, MyBudgeting can generate useful timeline and cost estimates.

Better (Gets You Refined Estimates)

  • Make and model — Allows MyBudgeting to use reliability data specific to your equipment
  • Service history — Well-maintained equipment may last longer than average

Best (Gets You the Most Accurate Picture)

  • All of the above, plus:
  • Sensor monitoring data — Real-time performance tracking reveals efficiency trends
  • Professional assessment notes — Your service professional's condition ratings
  • Serial number — Enables precise manufacture date and warranty status

Real-World Examples

Here is how MyBudgeting looks in practice for a typical home:

Example: The Johnson Home (Built 2008)

| Equipment | Age | Est. Remaining Life | Est. Replacement Cost | |-----------|-----|--------------------|-----------------------| | HVAC System | 18 years | 0-2 years | $6,000 - $12,000 | | Water Heater | 11 years | 0-1 years | $1,200 - $2,500 | | Sump Pump | 8 years | 0-2 years | $400 - $1,200 | | Refrigerator | 6 years | 6-12 years | $1,000 - $3,000 | | Washer | 4 years | 8-10 years | $600 - $1,500 | | Dryer | 4 years | 7-9 years | $500 - $1,200 |

MyBudgeting recommendation: "Three major items are approaching replacement within the next 1-2 years, with a combined cost of $7,600 - $15,700. Consider budgeting $400 - $650 per month to prepare."

How MyBudgeting Updates Over Time

MyBudgeting is not a one-time snapshot. It evolves as your home changes:

  • New equipment added — When you replace something, add the new appliance and the timeline adjusts
  • Service records — Maintenance visits and professional assessments can extend or shorten expected lifespans
  • Sensor data — Ongoing performance monitoring refines the timeline based on real behavior, not just averages
  • Market data — Replacement cost estimates are periodically updated to reflect current pricing

Tips for Getting the Most from MyBudgeting

  1. Add installation dates for everything. This is the single most impactful piece of information for accurate forecasting.
  2. Include make and model when possible. The AI Equipment Scan makes this easy.
  3. Log service visits. When your service professional performs maintenance or repairs, make sure it gets recorded. This data improves lifespan estimates.
  4. Check MyBudgeting quarterly. Review the timeline a few times a year to stay ahead of upcoming expenses.
  5. Share with your service professional. They can help you prioritize which items to address first based on their professional assessment.
  6. Plan, do not panic. The point of MyBudgeting is to give you time and information to make good decisions. An item approaching end of life does not mean it will fail tomorrow.
